LAck of trained teachers
According to the Minister of Basic Education of South Africa Angie Motshekga, more than 1700 teachers were not qualified to teach at secondary schools. This means that nearly 50000 students have not been receiving quality education from qualified teachers, especially in the subject of science, which has seen students performing weakly in. One of the reason for this situation was that the schools were not receiving enough teachers and were desperate enough to accept anyone, even if they had only studied the certain subject at matrix level (Silva, 2010). The lack of trained teachers is also because universities are producing less teachers, and teacher training colleges were closed down a few years ago, causing less teachers to be qualified to teach (2010). Lack of trained, qualified teachers means that teachers are not capable of providing quality education. Unqualified teachers may not be knowledgeable enough or may not teach students using appropriate, effective strategies to get the content across. Lack of trained, qualified teachers mean that students are not receiving quality education, which also contribute to the low literacy rate present in South Africa.
