HOW DOES THE LOW LITERACY RATE AFFECT POVERTY IN SOUTH AFRICA?
The low literacy rate in South Africa results in and is caused by the severe poverty of the people and this continues in a evil cycle, therefore it is important that the government step in to eradicate the poverty of South Africans.
Let start from the parents. When they are poor, the parents are unable to provide the money to give their children with an education. Naturally, the children would also not be able to have high qualifications. Even if the child are able to receive education, the parents might be in such poverty that they do not even have the money to allow the children to go to a good school or continue their studies and these children might have to end their studies prematurely, which will also result in a lack of knowledge and also low qualifications. With the low qualifications, it is natural that the citizens are unable to obtain high paying jobs and thus are unable to get out of poverty. Because of their low literacy, people are also limited in opportunities in work, education, housing and access to healthcare. The low literacy also gives people a lack in confidence in themselves, which will prevent them from seeking out opportunities and help themselves out of this cycle. This cycle repeats itself over and over again. From this, we are able to see that literacy and poverty are interlinked such that it repeats in a cycle, one linking to the other.
