Teacher absenteeism rate
Based on a survey, South Africa set the record for having the highest teacher absenteeism rate in all Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries with about 10 percent of SA teachers absent for an average of 19 days per teacher. Other SADC countries have a teacher absenteeism rate of 9 days per teacher. (2013) This shows that teachers in South Africa are absent more days than teachers in other countries, and this shows that South African teachers spend less time teaching students and preparing for the students’ education. The high teacher absenteeism meant that students receive less content as teachers spend less time teaching the students, and this also plays a part in the low literacy rate. Teacher absenteeism also cause violence in schools among students, as teachers are needed to maintain discipline and stop violence from happening. (Magubane and Rapertswane, 2013)
