Parent's Lack of PArticipation
Another reason causing the low literacy rate is the parents' lack of participation in their children's education. To help further develop the children's education, parents are advised to play an active part in their children's lives. They should help their children with their homework if they need help, be in touch of what their children are doing, whether it is homework, extra-curricular activities or projects, and provide encouragement and support. They can also take an interest in who their children befriends with, how they interact and whether they need parental guidance and direction.
However in South Africa, a lot of parents are not that educated themselves, and are unable to help their children academically wise or do not know how to help their children. Some parents may not know how to help their children and would resort to methods such as doing their children's homework, which is not helpful to their children as they would not learn for themselves. Some parents work long hours and are too tired to help their children when they return home. All this cause the lack of parental participation in children's education, which would in turn adversely affect the quality of their children's education as children will receive less help.
