Overcrowding in classrooms
The ratio of teachers to students in South African public schools is 1:32. This meant that for every 32 students in the school, there is 1 teacher. This is considered overcrowded, compared to the teacher to students ratio in Singapore public schools, which are 1:18. Overcrowded classrooms do have negative impacts on the quality of education students receive. A large ratio of teachers to students means that less attention is given to each students as 1 teacher has to handle approximately 32 students. Therefore, students who are weak in their understanding of the curriculum might not receive as much help as they require, leading to inadequacies in knowledge. The students learn less from the teacher because of the difference in attention, and therefore this will lead to the low literacy rate.
